Tuck Roll Carpet Edge

Vacuum the subfloor to remove all dirt and grit.

Pull the carpet over the top using a knee kicker. To turn and finish a carpet edge you use a carpet z bar along with tack strip. Step 3 measure the width of the doorway using a tape measure and then cut a carpet tack strip to the same width using tin snips. Using a carpet cutter and a utility knife photos 10 and 11 cut off the excess after the carpet is completely stretched.

Apply pressure downward on the carpet when stretching it so that it adheres to the tack strip. If the straight edge is wide and long enough kneel on it with one knee to hold it down. Cut the carpet with a slotted blade knife so that it is even with the edge of the tile. If there s already a carpet there cut it just a few inches longer than where you want to meet the tile.

There are other designs besides the one shown in this image. Step 4 hold the straight edge firmly in place. Use the carpet kicker and stretch the carpet over the tacks and past the tack strip by 1 4 inch. It will be nice and straight if you lay the bar and tack strip straight and are careful when trimming and tucking the carpet.

Place most of your weight on your hand over the tack strip area. Make sure that the carpet is rolled up neatly so that you have a good starting position for your roll edge process. After tacking you tamp down the z bar to secure the carpet edge. Start by unrolling your carpet and then take it up at one edge and pull it until you have the carpet as flat as possible.

Turn the carpet face down and place a metal straight edge along the edge of the carpet to be folded. Leave 1 inches of the carpet showing between the straight edge and the edge of the carpet. Turn the carpet edge around and you should be able to roll it into a suitable pipe shape. Start from the back side applying the tape where the carpet edge meets the center line of the tape that way you can fold the tape onto the top side.

Cut the edge of the carpet so that it reaches the edge of the tile perfectly. Embed the carpet edge firmly in the tack strip and under baseboards by forcing the front edge of the carpet cutter into the carpet and dragging it along the wall. Fold the carpet over the tack strip. Tap the carpet kicker to stretch the carpet in place over the padding and tack strip.

In essence it is a bar of metal that spans the transition length and is formed like a z so that the edge of the carpet is tucked under one edge. Step 5 tuck the end of the carpet into the gap between the tack strip and the tile by using a stair tool or a putty knife.
